In Chapter 8 of Reading With Meaning by Debbie Miller, we learn that when students make an inference, they are using their schema and textual evidence to draw conclusions and begin to draw unique interpretations of text. Debbie Miller tells us that students infer BEFORE they predict. She also teaches us that:

  • Readers make meaning of words by using their schema, using textual and picture clues, rereading, and sharing learning with others. pg. 107
  • Predictions have thinking behind them (inferences). pg. 111
  • Readers make their own unique interpretations of text by using their schema and textual clues. pg. 111
  • Readers infer answers to their questions when the answer is not explicitly stated. pg. 114
  • Evidence of Understanding and Independence. pg. 117
